Snowshoer who died at Mount Rainier, Brian Grobois, apparently was lost

A New York man on a snowshoe hike apparently got disoriented as clouds settled over the Paradise area and died from hypothermia.

That is the initial assessment of Mount Rainier National Park rangers who continue to investigate the death of Brian Grobois, 54, of New Rochelle, N.Y.

Grobois had left the Paradise parking lot sometime Sunday and was reported overdue by his family Monday at 9 a.m. Searchers in a helicopter spotted him Monday at the top of the Stevens Creek drainage, but could not get to him until Tuesday. He was taken by helicopter to Madigan Army Medical Center

New York man, Brian Grobois, dies while snowshoeing at Mount Rainier

UPDATED 4:04 P.M.

A 54-year-old New York man died sometime during a snowshoe hike that began Sunday above Paradise at Mount Rainier National Park. Dead is Brian Grobois of New Rochelle, N.Y.

A CH-47 Chinook helicopter from Joint Base Lewis-McChord was used Tuesday morning to lift Grobois from the mountain and take him to Madigan Army Medical Center. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

“It appeared he had been dead for 24 hours,” said park spokeswoman Patti Wold.
