Skydiver missing near North Bend’s Mount Si

From the Associated Press:

Search and rescue teams are looking for skydiver reported missing in the Cascade foothills east of Seattle.

King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West says the helicopter pilot reported that the skydiver had made a jump from about 2,000 feet near Mount Si on Thursday afternoon, but never showed up at the landing site. The pilot didn’t know whether the skydiver’s parachute had opened.

Woman lands 1,000-pound marlin, loses Hawaii fishing tournament

HONOLULU (AP) — A Hawaii tournament angler fought a 12-foot, half-ton marlin in the Pacific Ocean for more than four hours before she and her teammates got the monster fish out of the water — but she missed out on the glory and thousands of dollars in prize money.

Molly Palmer, 28, would have needed to reel in the fish by herself in order for it to qualify as a valid catch for the tournament, according to rules set by the International Game Fishing Association.

Ranger Nick Hall’s family “grieving and celebrating”

Family members of a Mount Rainier National Park ranger who died while rescuing injured climbers say they are “grieving and celebrating” Nick Hall.

His father, Carter Hall, told The Associated Press from his home in Maine that the family is proud of his career in mountain rescue. He says they hope his loss draws attention to the hazards and safety requirements of the sport he so loved.

A park spokesman says rangers are hoping weather will permit a helicopter to recover Hall’s body Friday and to pick up the last member of the party he helped
