Fishing report: Spanaway Lake producing big trout

Here are the highlights from the fishing report that will run in Saturday’s Sports section.

With good weather in the forecast, there might be a lot of people at your favorite fishing hole. Remember to give each other some room and enjoy the Easter weekend.

The state has put some new fishing rules in place, as an emergency, while the permanent regulations approved in March by the state Fish and Wildlife Commission will take effect May 1.

Fishing report: Conditions improve on Olympic Coast rivers

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will run in Wednesday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Columbia: During the first three days of March they state checked 760 anglers who had caught 17 spring chinook and eight steelhead. All but one of the chinook were caught by boat anglers from Kalama to Vancouver. The steelhead were caught from Vancouver downstream. During Saturday’s effort flight count, there were 280 boats and 355 bank anglers. Sturgeon has been on the slow side below and above Bonneville Dam.

Fishing report: Mixed reports on steelhead action

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will be appear in Saturday’s Sports section:

Lakes

American: Anglers are reporting they have been catching smaller fish as of late. Power Eggs, in green or yellow, fished off the bottom is still the go-to method right now. People are using garlic and herring scents.

Offut: The action for the trout has been pretty consistent for this time of year. The rainbows have been measuring 14-20 inches with a good girth. Most people are using dough bait and worms fished off the bottom.

Spanaway: The fishing has been a little slow.

Fishing report: Record catch at Roche Harbor salmon derby

Here are some of the highlights from the fishing report that will appear in the Sports section of Wednesday’s paper:

Rivers

Cowlitz: The fishing has been slow. A state creel check of six bank anglers showed they released two steelhead and one cutthroat. Last week, Tacoma Power recovered just 23 winter-run steelhead, eight coho adults and two jacks during five days of operations at the Cowlitz Salmon Hatchery separator.

Fishing report: Steelhead action on the slow side

Rivers

Cowlitz: The steelhead fishing has been very slow. A state creel sample of 13 bank anglers showed no catch and eight boat anglers kept just one steelhead. Thursday will be the last day to fish lower end of Blue and Mill creeks in the current two-month season.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead action has been spotty for the most part, but the fish people are catching tend to be fairly large. The Sol Duc and the Hoh have been the most consistent producers. Fishing on Bogachiel has been best in the lower river.

Fishing report: Decent river action, lakes a little slow

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Cowlitz: Anglers are catching mostly steelhead these. The best action has been around the trout hatchery. Fish close to the brush with small gear with current river conditions.

Lewis: Anglers are catching steelhead and some fall chinook, primarily from the North Fork around the salmon hatchery. Most of the chinook were released.

Olympic Coast: The steelhead action has been pretty good with the rivers in really good shape. The Hoh has been fishing as well as any other river in the area. There is

Fishing report: Trout lakes continue to fish well

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Saturday’s paper.

Lakes
American: Look for the rainbow trout holding among the weeds in shallow water. Try using yellow Power Bait on a 4-foot leader. Some of the fish are topping 20 inches long.

Munn: The lake is still fishing well for trout. Go with white leeches fished on an intermediate- or fast-sink line.

Offut: The fishing for trout has improved, with most people catching their limits of rainbow trout. Some people are catching their limits in close to an hour. Dock anglers are using worms and

Fishing report: River levels dropping

Here are some of the highlights from the fishing report that will appear in Wednesday’s Sports section.

Rivers

Minter: The chum fishing has been very good, with people catching some bright fish among the darker fish. There are lots of fish in the creek, making it hard to not foul hook some.

Nisqually: The reports have shown the fishing has improved along with the weather. People are catching some limits of bright chum.

Olympic Coast: The first of the winter-run steelhead are showing up in the rivers around Forks and the action has been pretty good.
