Fitness update: Local results from the triathlon and Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Beijing and Vegas

As promised in today’s fitness column, here are the results from some local athletes competing on the big stage.

IRONMAN 70.3 WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS
Henderson, Nev.

Heidi Hubler, a 37-year-old Bonney Lake resident and elementary school teacher, just finished her first appearance at the Ironman 70.3 (half Ironman) world championships in a time of 5 hours, 28 minutes, 7 seconds. She finished 40th in her age group and made up ground throughout the cycling and running legs. She was 49th after the swim and 44th after the bike portion.

Father-daughter triathletes have mixed results at nationals

Hope you saw our recent post about Doug and Alycia Hill, a father-daughter triathlon team who both finished in the top five at  worlds last month.

Well they just got back from nationals in Tuscaloosa where they were trying to qualify for the 2011 world championships in Beijing. Only Doug earned an automatic qualifying spot. Here’s an e-mail I recently received from him:

Father-daughter triathletes earn top 4 finishes at Worlds

A father-daughter triathlon combo from Tacoma each earned top four finishes in their age groups at the World Championships earlier this month in Budapest.

Doug Hill, 55, and Alycia Hill, 21, leave for Tuscaloosa on Thursday to compete for a spot in the 2011 World Championships in Beijing.

Doug, who has been competing in triathlons since 1985, won the bronze medal in his age group.

Alycia, a nursing major at Seattle University, finished fourth in her age group in Budapest.

IRONMAN UPDATE: Race 4 Ty raises more than $10,000

I got an e-mail tonight from Jennifer Block, the Ironman competitor from Puyallup.


Block dedicated her race to Ty Quandt, an Edgewood boy who has Niemann-Pick Type C. The disease slowly takes down its victims by deteriorating the nervous system. Most victims die from the disease before they turn 20.


Block, 46, Finished 30th in her age group at Ironman.


Block said the race effort exceeded the $10,000 fundraising goal by $400.

All South Sound racers finish at Ironman World Championship

All eight South Sound athletes who qualified for the Ironman World Championship, finished the grueling triathlon Saturday.


An Ironman triathlon is a 2.4-mile swim, 112 mile bike and a marathon run in succession.


Elizabeth Thiel, 30, of DuPont and Caroline White, 23, of Lakewood had the best performances of the locals. Thiel’s time of 11 hours, 12 minutes, 36 seconds was best of the South Sound competitors. Thiel finished 24th in her age group.

White had the best finish of locals, taking 12th in her age group in 11:36:08.

Washington has 36 Ironmen

Just got confirmation from Ironman on who’ll be participating in the world Championship Oct. 11 in Kona, Hawaii.


Ironman is a famously grueling triathlon. It is a 2.4-mile swim, 112-mile bike and concludes with a marathon (26.2 miles).
