Hunger Games coming to Tacoma on Thursday night. Please, no killing.

Hide your children and flee for the woods, the Hunger Games are coming to Tacoma.

Tacoma’s Trident Athletics is staging its own version of the Hunger Games on Thursday; with free events planned for 5 and 6:30 p.m. Participants will take part in Hunger Games-themed CrossFit workouts while the soundtrack plays in the background.

Varying from the wildly popular movie and books, participants are discouraged from killing each other. Love triangles are optional.

The workouts will incorporate four skills used by “Hunger Games” heroine Katniss Everdeen: Archery, tree climbing, speed work and strength.

If you read yesterday’s fitness column came here looking for more nutrition and eating tips from MultiCare dietitian Claire Kjeld, I apologize for the technical difficulties that kept us from posting this until now. Nevertheless, here is an article Kjeld wrote about eating better:

Local weight loss phenom to be featured by “People” magazine, “Today” show

When Wendy McConkey decided it was time to lose weight the idea of appearing on national TV and in magazines and newspapers didn’t cross her mind.

The Fircrest resident was just upset about the bruise on her side. It was 2006 and McConkey weighed 449.6 pounds. She wedged herself into an airplane seat for a 4.5-hour flight and spent the entire trip in agony as she pressed against the armrests. The bruises lasted for a week, but the memory still hasn’t faded.

Today, McConkey is 302 pounds lighter and is enjoying her 15 minutes of fame.

Free fitness starting Dec. 12 at Tacoma’s Trident Athletics for Tacoma police, fire employees

Possible layoffs of 100 Tacoma police and fire employees has inspired Tacoma’s Trident Athletics to offer members of these departments a free month membership at their gym starting Dec. 12.

“We know how important it is to stay mentally and physically sharp during such stressful situations,” said Trident spokeswoman Heather Austin via email. “Our owner and coach, Jeff Serven, is a former Navy SEAL and very passionate about helping.  Additionally, several of our students are current members of the Tacoma police department or firefighters living in Tacoma but working for other cities.”

Bothell-based Brooks Sports to release next generation of “barefoot running shoes” tomorrow

The PureProject line is the new barefoot shoe from Bothell-based Brooks Sports.

While barefoot and minimalist shoes are the rage in the running world right now, it’s not like you can buy a pair of these things and head out for a 5-mile run. You have to start slow and slowly work your way back to your regular distances. Go too far too fast and your feet are going to hurt.

Fitness update: Local results from the triathlon and Ironman 70.3 World Championships in Beijing and Vegas

As promised in today’s fitness column, here are the results from some local athletes competing on the big stage.

Henderson, Nev.

Heidi Hubler, a 37-year-old Bonney Lake resident and elementary school teacher, just finished her first appearance at the Ironman 70.3 (half Ironman) world championships in a time of 5 hours, 28 minutes, 7 seconds. She finished 40th in her age group and made up ground throughout the cycling and running legs. She was 49th after the swim and 44th after the bike portion.
