Molina Healthcare offering free yoga class, mats at Tacoma Mall on May 18

The Tacoma Mall will be the site of a free yoga class at 1 p.m. on May 18. The first 400 people receive a free yoga mat. The event is sponsored by Molina Healthcare whose spokeswoman says the program is designed to introduce people of all ages to yoga as a form of exercise, chronic pain management and stress reliever.  The class will take place near the entrance to Macy’s.  More than 100 children from the Boys and Girls Clubs of South Puget Sound plan to attend.  


Yaffbars: Energy bars you can share with your dog

I went for a 50-mile bike ride this morning and Lucky The Adventure Dog went on a 5-mile walk.  Seemed like the perfect time to review a new energy bar from Mudd and Wyeth. The Vermont company is launching Yaffbars, an all natural energy bar designed to be shared with your dog. According to the website – – they are baked with all natural ingredients and come in blueberry carob, banana peanut butter and cranberry almond.

Local runners to celebrate 59th anniversary of Roger Bannister’s 4-minute mile

Monday is the 59th anniversary of Roger Bannister running the first sub four minute mile and for the 10th year in a row local runners plan to celebrate.

There is no fee to join in the 1-mile run on the Wilson High track, said organizer Yannick Kiefer-Fourage. Anybody who breaks four minutes wins $1,000, he said.

The event record is 4:39, set by former Sound to Narrows champ Eric Tollefson.

Runners of all speeds are invited and the event will begin with a short children’s run.

Tacoma native wins Eugene Marathon

Jaymee Marty, a 45-year-old Tacoma native, won the Eugene Marathon on Sunday.

Marty finished the 26.2-mile race in 2 hours, 48 minutes and 55 seconds. It was her 20th marathon and her first victory.

She told the Eugene Register-Guard that she opted out of running the Boston Marathon to focus on the Eugene race.

“That was the goal here,” said Marty. “And when you run the times that I run, it’s all about who shows up, so I got lucky today. I knew there were a lot of fast women on the list. I thought (my chances) were 50-50. Like

Fishing report: Mixed reports on steelhead action

Here are some highlights from the fishing report that will be appear in Saturday’s Sports section:


American: Anglers are reporting they have been catching smaller fish as of late. Power Eggs, in green or yellow, fished off the bottom is still the go-to method right now. People are using garlic and herring scents.

Offut: The action for the trout has been pretty consistent for this time of year. The rainbows have been measuring 14-20 inches with a good girth. Most people are using dough bait and worms fished off the bottom.

Spanaway: The fishing has been a little slow.

Fabio to promote nutrition supplements Saturday at Proctor Metropolitan Market

After decades of making women weak in the knees, Italian model Fabio Lanzoni plans to show Tacoma how to get stronger Saturday.

The romance novel cover model, author, actor and fitness guru will appear Saturday from noon to 3 p.m. at the Proctor Metropolitan Market.

Fabio’s appearance is to promote whey protein and other nutrition products developed by his company, Healthy Planet Nutrition.
