Bass Pro Shops coming to Tacoma in summer 2014

Huge news for the fishing, boating and hunting crowd, Bass Pro Shops announced just a short time ago that it was opening a store in Tacoma.

The outdoor retailer will be moving into the former Lowe’s location near South 72nd Street and Interstate 5.

The store will be 170,000 square feet and is scheduled to open in summer 2014.

This will be the first Bass Pro Shops retail store in the Northwest. The nearest store to the South Sound is in Manteca, Calif., south of Stockton.

Grays Harbor Outdoor Adventure & Travel Expo takes place this weekend

The third annual Grays Harbor Outdoor Adventure & Travel Expo will take place this weekend at the Grays Harbor Fairgrounds.

Among the highlights will be appearances Sunday by Edgar Hansen and Nick Mavar Jr. of the MV Northwestern, from the Discovery Channel television series “Deadliest Catch.” Also appearing will be Glenn Hall of Hawg Quest both days, and Nick Mundt of “The Bone Collector” show, who will appear Saturday.

Also at the expo, vendors and exhibitors will tout the outdoor experiences, products and recreational destinations that make the Grays Harbor County a worthy destination. Exhibitors include fishing guides and lodging

New website provides bar crossing info, images

The U.S. Coast Guard and National Weather Service have develop a website to provide coastal boaters with weather and Coast Guard observations to evaluate bar restrictions and conditions.

You can access the website by clicking here.

The website gives boaters a place to not only see the entrance or bar through updated camera images, but also the Coast Guard’s evaluation of the bar conditions and any restrictions that may be in place.

Coast Guard helicopter rescues woman injured while rafting Tilton River

A U.S. Coast Guard helicopter was needed Sunday to rescue a 40-year-old female on the Tilton River about 30 miles northwest of Longview.

The woman was injured after being thrown from a raft on the river. Lewis County emergency response crews were unable to safely rescue her from the river bank due to the steep terrain a the ravine.

The Coast Guard sent an MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from Air Station Astoria, Ore., to assist. The crew arrived on scene and hoisted the woman on board at 4:51 p.m.

The helicopter crew transported the woman to a Lewis Country fire

Law enforcement patrols will emphasize boating under the influence laws June 22-24

Officers from 50 marine law enforcement agencies will be out Friday-Sunday for Operation Dry Water, the annual campaign to enforce boating under the influence laws on Washington’s waterways.

The campaign focuses on preventing accidents, injuries and deaths resulting from people abusing alcohol or drugs while operating boats. According to Washington State Parks Boating Programs, at least 30 people died between 2007-2011 in reportable boating accidents where alcohol use was a contributing factor.

Boat inspections will be offered Saturday in Gig Harbor

Members of the Gig Harbor Police Marine Patrol will be available Saturday from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. to provide safety inspections for all boats.

This event is to help the boating public make sure that they have the proper safety equipment for their boats. Staffers from West Marine also will be on hand to help update outdated equipment.

Patrol officers will be able to answer questions about the Mandatory Boater Education Card.

This year, if you are 40 years or younger you are required to have a boater education card.

Registration open for Mountaineers basic sea kayak course

Registration has opened for the Tacoma Mountaineers basic sea kayak course that is scheduled for April 7–29.

The course is loaded with practical information, hands-on education, introduction to kayak gear and an emphasis on paddling safety, said a news release. Participants will learn the basic paddling strokes, how to get back in your boat if you go over, basic trip planning and navigation and how to recognize and avoid dangerous situations.

No prior kayaking knowledge or experience is required to participate in this course.
