The state, working with the Wenatchee Heights Reclamation District and a local fly-fishing group, will open Upper Wheeler Reservoir to fly fishing only starting May 18.

Anglers will be able to fish for trout and all other game fish through Sept. 14.

The reservoir is located about 11 miles southwest of Wenatchee in Chelan County.

The reservoir is owned and operated by the Wenatchee Heights Reclamation District and has been closed to public access. The state Department of Fish and Wildlife has made arrangements with the district and the Wenatchee Valley Fly Fishers to grant public access to recreational anglers under fly fishing-only regulations, said a department news release. The agreement includes fish stocking and a land-use agreement by the state agency, and site maintenance by the fly-fishing group. While there are currently 15 other fly fishing-only waters throughout the state, there are no such waters currently open in Chelan County.

The regulations will require catch and release for trout. Statewide general rules for size and bag limits apply for all other game fish. The use of motors is prohibited. Anglers should consult the current sportfishing rules pamphlet for a definition of fly fishing-only regulations.
