A man died in Edith Creek on Wednesday above Paradise, a Mount Rainier National Park spokesman confirmed Thursday.

The man, who has not yet been identified, was sliding intentionally on the snow when he fell through and into the creek, spokeswoman Patti Wold said.

The man was washed about 30 feet and was trapped under the snow, she said. His son called for help and a team of guides from Rainier Mountaineering Inc. were first to respond.

A guide climbed into the hole and found the man. The man was removed from the creek and CPR was performed but he could not be revived. Wold said the recovery was “highly complex.”
