Crime reporter Stacey Mulik posted this story earlier today. I thought it would be of interest to our Adventure readers as well.

A 25-year-old Tacoma woman convicted of breaking into cars parked at Mount Rainier National Park was sentenced to two years in federal prison today.

Pamela N. Williams pleaded guilty to conspiracy and aggravated identity theft charges, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported.

Prosecutors alleged Williams and her accomplice, Matthew Mortinson, smashed car windows and removed truck canopies to break into vehicles that were parked at various trailheads. The two stole backpacks, purses, wallets, laptop computers, passports, outdoor tools and credit cards.

The two then used the stolen credit cards to make purchases, prosecutors allege.

Mortinson was arrested during a traffic stop. He was later linked to Williams and the thefts at Mount Rainier.

Investigators searched Williams’ home and found some of the stolen goods, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reported.

Williams pleaded guilty in December; Mortinson is scheduled for trial in June.

In addition to two years in federal prison, Williams was banned from Mount Rainier National Park. She’ll be supervised for three years after her release and was ordered to pay $7,034 in restitution.

Prosecutors called Williams’ behavior egregious in their sentencing memo.

“Not only does identity theft leave nearly all members of society who engage in even the most basic economic transactions feeling vulnerable, trailhead car prowling seriously undermines the public’s enjoyment of its natural areas,” prosecutors wrote.
