Hide your children and flee for the woods, the Hunger Games are coming to Tacoma.

Tacoma’s Trident Athletics is staging its own version of the Hunger Games on Thursday; with free events planned for 5 and 6:30 p.m. Participants will take part in Hunger Games-themed CrossFit workouts while the soundtrack plays in the background.

Varying from the wildly popular movie and books, participants are discouraged from killing each other. Love triangles are optional.

The workouts will incorporate four skills used by “Hunger Games” heroine Katniss Everdeen: Archery, tree climbing, speed work and strength.

“These skills and exercise will be scaled to match the abilities of attendees,” said a statement released by Trident spokeswoman Heather Austin. This is to keep the odds of finishing and avoiding injury ever in your favor.

The classes will be led by former Navy Seal Jeff Serven.

According to the statement released by Austin, the idea for the workout stems from the fact that CrossFit training is similar to that done by the fictional tributes who prepared for the last-man-standing Hunger Games.

“Much of the Hunger Games training is similar to the non-traditional, high-intensity CrossFit method that Trident Athletics already teaches,” Austin said. “Jeff Serven’s ability to translate Hunger Games activities in a safe and interesting way makes it an ideal opportunity for community members – of any fitness level – to get an actual taste of the Hunger Games tribute’s training.”

Events will include shooting arrows, jumping over obstacles and climbing ropes. Trident Athletics is located at 5206 South Tacoma Way. For more information call 253-777-9714.
