Ranger Kraig Snure and Pierce County Sheriff deputies honored for response to Jan. 1 shooting of Mount Rainier Ranger Margaret Anderson.

A Mount Rainier National Park ranger and five deputies were honored recently for his attempt to rescue fallen coworker Margaret Anderson, who was shot by a park visitor on Jan. 1.

West District ranger Kraig Snure received a medal of valor from the Pierce County Sheriff’s department on March 29 for “demonstrating exceptional bravery.” Sgt. Nick Hausner and deputies Frank Brown, Brian Coburn, Kevin Reding and Ara Steben received the same honor.

Snure and the officers were the first to re-enter the scene of the shooting that killed Anderson. Anderson was shot by a motorist who refused to stop at winter tire checkpoint. The gunman fled into the wild on foot and was found dead a day later, drowned in Paradise River.

“Snure and the team of deputies quickly determined that Anderson had to be found,” read a statement released today by Mount Rainier National Park chief ranger Chuck Young. “They developed a hasty plan and moved toward her last known location as additional gunshots were being heard.

“Despite an extremely high level of danger to themselves, they were able to find Anderson, secure her body, and return to the command post.”

During the ceremony the park also presented a plaque to the Pierce County Sheriff’s Department as thanks for support in responding to Anderson’s death.
