Margaret Anderson: Mount Rainier National Park reopens

Mount Rainier National Park reopened this morning afte rbeing shut down since law enforcement ranger Margaret Anderson was shot and killed New Year’s Day.

The entrance gates opened at 8 a.m. and the gate to Paradise opened about 9:30 a.m. Tire chains or four-wheel-drive or all-wheel drive are required on the road from Longmire to Paradise.

Temperatures were in the mid 20s this morning at Paradise, and some snow had fallen over night.

Webcams showed the parking lot was filling up slowly, but there didn’t seem to be a large crowd as of 10:30 a.m.

Perhaps keeping the number of visitors down is the fact that the snowplay area will be closed all weekend because of a lack of manpower to groom the runs and monitor the area.

Reporter Craig Hill and photographer Dean Koepfler were at the park early this morning and will be posting content later today.
