Winter wonderland at Paradise

This is what winter should look like, snow-flocked trees, Mount Rainier in the background – not the mix of ice, snow, spun-out cars and traffic backups that have plagued the South Sound the last few days.

And if you thought it was cold while warming up your car this morning, it was 0 degrees at Paradise and -2 degrees at Camp Muir at 7 this morning. There also was 65 inches of snow on the ground at Paradise this morning.

If you’re looking for a place to play after Thanksgiving, there is snow in the forecast through the weekend at

More ski areas poised to open this week

While the arctic blast that blanketed the South Sound with snow yesterday might be frustrating for some, it couldn’t be a more welcome site for skiers and snowboarders.

The first installment of the La Nina winter has the ski season inching closer to full operation around Washington.

The Summit at Snoqualmie will open Summit West on Thursday. The ski area will remain open through Sunday then close Monday and Tuesday.

White Pass is set to open Saturday and Crystal Mountain reopens Thursday after a three-day closure.

Mt. Baker is open and Mission Ridge, near Wenatchee, plans to open Friday.

Mission Ridge opens Friday

Just got this e-mail this morning from Mission Ridge.

Officials at Mission Ridge Ski & Board Resort have announced that the area is opening for skiing and riding this Friday, November 26th through Sunday, November 28th from 9:00AM to 4:00PM.

“This early opening will have limited terrain with an excellent surface on the open slopes.  The Ridge’s snowmakers have been hammering the production and making mountains of snow with these low temperatures.  The snow guns are blazing now as they close in on the lower mountain and base area before moving over to the Chair #4 terrain,” said Mark Milliette,

Lots of snow at Paradise for skiers, boarders and snowshoers

If the road is open, there should be some good snow for skiing, snowboarding and snowshoeing at Paradise this weekend.

Uwe Nehring, acting chief ranger at Mount Rainier National Park, said crews worked hard to plow the snow so they could get the road from Longmire to Paradise open earlier today.

With nearly 50 inches of snow on the ground, Nehring said “skiing and snowshoeing activities should be good when we get the road open.”

The groomed snowplay area at Paradise is not expected to open until Dec. 19. Park officials do now want to open the area until there
