Here is a tidbit from my fishing report I just filed for tomorrow’s News Tribune and Olympian:

Anglers know the coho salmon run on the Puyallup River has been slow. It has been so bad, however, that the Puyallup Tribe of Indians has shut down its commercial fishery until further notice.

The state Department of Fish and Wildlife also is discussing a possible closure, said fish biologist Steve Thiesfeld, but a decision had not been made as of press time.

As of Friday, only 10 coho had returned to the Voight’s Creek Hatchery. There should have between 350-600 coho by then.

The Tribal Council and Fish Commission will consider reopening their commercial fishery if the coho numbers get close to the escapement goal 1,000-1,200 fish.
