Coast Guard chopper lifts ill hiker from Mount St. Helens

The Coast Guard was called in Mondayto hoist a distressed hiker from the base of Mount St. Helens. 

Coast Guard Air Station Astoria received a call from the Washington State Emergency Operations Center via Cowlitz County 911 dispatch at approximately 7:30 p.m. Officials were requesting helicopter assistance for a 55-year old male suffering from possible heat related injuries, said a Coast Guard press release.

Air Station Astoria launched an HH-60J Jayhawk helicopter crew to the Toutle River area at the base of Mount St. Helens.

The helicopter rescue crew hoisted and transported two men and a dog to the Long View/Kelso Airport. Awaiting emergency medical personnel transported the men and dog to the Cowlitz County Fire and Rescue Main Station in Kelso, the release said.

The condition of the 55-year old man is unknown at this time.
