Mailbox Peak Road and access to the popular Mailbox Peak trail near North Bend will be closed beginning Monday, as crews begin to finish repairs from the winter 2009 storm damage. The closure is necessary because heavy machinery and trucks will be working in the vicinity, officials from the state Department of Natural Resources said.
Access to the trail will be open on weekends, as the contractor will only be working on weekdays. The department anticipates the area will reopen Aug. 21.
Most of the trail is located in the newly designated Middle Fork Snoqualmie Natural Resources Conservation Area, managed by the department. The trail up to Mailbox Peak gains 4,000 feet elevation in 2.5 miles and is incredibly steep. Advanced hikers often use this trail for training purposes.
