The climber missing after an avalanche on the upper slopes of Mount Rainier is believed to be a 27-year-old man from Olympia, park spokeswoman Patti Wold said.

The park is not releasing the name of the climber who is believe to be the first climbing death on the mountain since 2005.

Three climbing rangers at Camp Muir are waiting for avalanche conditions to improve so they can launch a ground search.
Avalanche conditions are currently high and the upper mountain received as much as 18 inches of snow over night.

Eleven climbers were caught in an avalanche on Saturday morning. Ten of the climbers were rescued. The missing climber reportedly did not register with the climbing rangers.
