The State Parks and Recreation Commission is meeting today in Lakewood

The meeting is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. at the Lakewood Community Center, 9112 Lakewood Drive S.E., Lakewood.

Among the scheduled items, the Commission will consider approval of a Classification and Management Plan (CAMP) for the proposed Nisqually-Mashel state park. The commission will also take public comments regarding the name of the proposed park.

In 1987, the Washington State Legislature approved the Nisqually River Management Plan, which called for a major destination park at the confluence of the Nisqually and Mashel rivers, together with trails up the Mashel River. Since then, State Parks has worked to assemble a land base suitable for such a destination park, said a department news release. In the 2005-07 biennium, the Legislature funded a master plan for the park.

While there are still hopes parts of the park can be developed by 2013, the centennial of the state parks, progress in creating the park has been slowed by the state’s budget crisis.
