Patricia Taylor Lantz, a Raft Island resident, was today appointed by Gov. Chris Gregoire to serve a six-year term on the Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission.

Lantz is an avid hiker – she backpacked the Wonderland Trail around Mount Rainier with two friends at age 18 – bicyclist, kayaker and beach explorer.

She fills the position left by the retirement of Joan Thomas of Seattle. Lantz’s term will run through December 2016. She is expected to attend her first meeting as a commissioner in May.

The seven-person commission manages 120 developed state parks and cross-state programs, including winter recreation, boating programs and long-distance trails.

A former attorney, Lantz retired in January 2009 after six terms in the State House of Representatives. Lantz served as chairwoman of the Judiciary Committee and served on the Natural Resources and Capital Budget committees. She also chaired the Heritage Caucus, comprised of state parks, arts, cultural resources, civics and historic preservation organizations and their advocates from across the state.

“I believe that parks are not only places of recreation, but they are places of renewal,” Lantz said in a prepared statement. “They are some of our most treasured and valued assets, and they are essential for the preservation of our history and culture in Washington. These are places that we need to care for and protect because they are the places we most want to be there for our children and grandchildren to enjoy.”

While in the House, the Gig Harbor resident represented the 26th Legislative District, covering the Gig Harbor and Key peninsulas as well as much of the Kitsap Peninsula.

She has been married for 49 years to retired businessman John Lantz. They have three children, now grown, and six grandchildren.
