A release from WSDOT:

HYAK- I-90 Eastbound traffic is stopped at North Bend (milepost 34) and westbound traffic is stopped at Ellensburg (milepost 106).

WSDOT and WSP anticipate it will take several hours to clear the highway of natural avalanches, several weather related collisions, heavy snowfall and additional necessary avalanche control work.

At 7:25 a.m. an avalanche came down naturally and blocked the eastbound lanes of I-90 at the East Snow Shed, six miles east of Snoqualmie Pass. All vehicles that drove into and got stuck in the natural avalanche snow bank have been cleared. No injuries were reported.

At the summit of Snoqualmie Pass, a foot of snow accumulated overnight. The weather forecast calls for heavy snowfall for the next 24 to 36 hours, as much as two additional feet. If this forecast proves to be accurate, avalanche control work will be needed in several locations at different times throughout the duration of the storm. I-90 will be closed during avalanche control work.

Other mountain passes are experiencing similar heavy snowfall, challenging driving conditions and delays due to avalanche control work. These extreme conditions are expected to continue for the next 24 to 36 hours.

To get the latest conditions on all mountain passes visit:

or call 511. While on the road, tune to the highway advisory radios at AM 1610 and AM 530.

In any event here’s a link to a few webcams showing nasty driving conditions right now.
